Take Care Black Girl Foundation

The State of Healing

Black Women's Health & Advocacy Lab

Black women deserve more than conversations about our health. We deserve to shape what comes next.

State of Healing is a Black women-centered health, healing and advocacy initiative from Take Care Black Girl Foundation.

We're creating spaces across Colorado where Black women can rest, talk honestly about what affects our health, connect to useful resources and help shape better solutions for our communities.

Come to a gathering. Use the resources. Share what you're experiencing. Help shape what comes next.

How State of Healing works

One journey, five ways in.

  1. 01

    Rest.

Culturally grounded wellness experiences, plus simple practices and Healing Kit tools that support you beyond the event.

  2. 02

    Be heard.

Community conversations about health, stress, burnout, caregiving, healthcare experiences, work, reproductive health — the things affecting our lives.

  3. 03

    Connect.

Useful health, wellness and community resources, and the people and organizations working to support Black women.

  4. 04

    Lead.

Opportunities for Black women to step into community leadership, including our State of Healing Fellows.

  5. 05

    Create change.

What we hear shouldn't disappear after an event. Your stories and needs shape resources, partnerships, The Healing State and future advocacy.

We're listening

Your experience matters.

Black women know what we need.
State of Healing creates intentional opportunities for us to talk about what's affecting our health, what supports our well-being and what needs to change.

Sharing is voluntary and anonymous — no name or contact details needed. Answer one question or all three. Responses go to Take Care Black Girl Foundation and help shape future wellness, listening and advocacy programming. This is separate from your Healing Journal, which stays on your device.

Community Listening Labs

Come sit with us.

State of Healing Listening Labs are facilitated community conversations where Black women can speak honestly about our health, experiences, barriers, resources and what needs to change.

These are not lectures.

They're spaces to listen, share, connect and help shape what comes next.

Topics may explore

  • Stress + burnout
  • Mental and emotional well-being
  • Healthcare experiences + being heard
  • Work, money + caregiving
  • Maternal + reproductive health
  • Rest + healing
  • Community solutions

State of Healing Fellows

10 Black women. One cohort. Listening, healing and action.

Take Care Black Girl Foundation is selecting 10 State of Healing Fellows to support the Black Women’s Health & Advocacy Lab, a three-year initiative centered on the health, healing and lived experiences of Black women in Colorado.

State of Healing Fellows will be trained in community listening, trauma-informed engagement, ethical storytelling, documentation and health advocacy. Fellows will then help support and facilitate Community Listening Labs across Denver, Aurora and Colorado Springs and help turn what we hear into community resources, stories and recommendations.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for Black women who care deeply about the health, healing and future of Black women and who are interested in community leadership.

Applicants do not need to be therapists, healthcare professionals or experienced facilitators.

We especially welcome women with interests or lived/community experience related to:

  • Mental health, stress and rest
  • Healthcare access and advocacy
  • Maternal and reproductive health
  • Economic wellness
  • Storytelling
  • Community organizing and advocacy
  • Black women’s wellness and community care

This is a community leadership fellowship — not a therapist or clinical-provider role.

Selected Fellows will receive training before facilitating community conversations.

The fellowship experience

  2. Observe
  3. Practice
  4. Co-facilitate

We don't want to just collect stories.

We're listening for patterns.

  • What are Black women experiencing?
  • What keeps coming up?
  • Where are the gaps?
  • What resources are needed?
  • What needs to change?

What we learn through State of Healing will help inform community resources, partnerships, future programming, advocacy recommendations and The Healing State — our publication documenting what we're hearing and what Black women say they need to thrive.
